Massachusetts Gun Law Changes for 2024
H.4885 Has passed the Massachusetts House and Senate and has now been signed into law.
What does this mean for future Massachusetts Firearms Licensees? A new training syllabus and live fire training requirement will be put into place by the Massachusetts State Police within 9 months of the legislation taking effect (8/1/2024).
We have been told by GOAL the MA State Police have stated the new syllabus and requirements for training will not be in place for some months following 8/1/2024 and training will remain “status quote”, or “as is” until that time. The law gives the State Police up to 9 months to develop and implement the new training syllabus and Live Fire Training requirement. We highly recommend you monitor the GOAL web site. GOAL is the authority on MA firearms legislative affairs, if you are not already a member, you should be.
Pending the implementation of the new training requirements, you may attend our basic firearms safety class (Semi Private LTC Class) and if you apply before the implementation of the new requirements, you should be able to obtain your LTC/ FID as you can under the present training requirements. We HIGHLY suggest that you speak directly to the licensing officer in your home City/ Town to see if your police department has made any changes to its specific licensing process, as the new processes and syllabus is developed by the State Police.
If you live in Quincy, Rockland, Weymouth, or Sharon, your specific town requires you to complete live fire training, this is unrelated to the new gun laws, however you will need to complete live fire training if you live in Quincy, Rockland, Weymouth, or Sharon, regardless of the training requirements.
GOAL has published a detailed web page that has the most recent legal analysis of the new laws in detail https://www.goal.org
